Roof Cleaning & Moss Removal

Moss cleared properly, gutters cleared afterwards and a biocide treatment applied so it stays clean for years rather than months. No high pressure anywhere near your tiles.

The Problem

Moss Is Doing More Than Looking Untidy

A moss covered roof holds water against the tiles instead of letting it run off. Through a South Yorkshire winter that means constant damp, freeze and thaw cycles working at the tile surface, and clumps of moss washing straight down into your gutters until they block and overflow.

Left long enough it gets expensive. Blocked gutters soak fascias and brickwork, saturated tiles lose their frost resistance, and what would have been a cleaning job turns into a repair job.

  • Stops moss clumps blocking gutters and downpipes
  • Reduces damp holding against tiles and mortar
  • Lets you spot slipped or cracked tiles that were hidden
  • Makes a huge difference to how the whole property looks

Our Method

Cleared By Hand Or Soft Washed. Never Blasted.

Roof tiles have a protective surface layer on them. Hit that with a pressure washer and you strip it off, shorten the life of the tile and risk forcing water underneath into the roof space. So we do not do it.

Instead moss is removed by hand or with controlled low pressure soft washing, depending on the tile type and how thick the growth is. Slower, more careful, and the reason your roof still looks right in five years.

  • Manual removal or controlled soft washing, matched to the tile
  • Gutters and downpipes cleared of the debris afterwards, always
  • Biocide treatment applied to slow regrowth for years
  • Before and after photos so you can see the work up close

The Biocide Is What Makes It Last

A clean on its own looks great for a season. The moss, algae and lichen spores are still in the surface though, so it comes back.

Once the roof is clear we apply a professional biocide treatment that keeps working long after we have packed up. It kills off what is left at spore level and slows regrowth dramatically, which is why our roof cleans hold up far longer than a quick wash down.

  • Applied across the whole roof, not just the worst patches
  • Biodegradable and safe around planting and pets once dry
  • Keeps working for months after the visit
  • Optional repeat treatment if your roof is heavily shaded

A Roof We Cleaned In Sheffield

This is what a South Yorkshire roof looks like before we get to it. Moss sitting in every channel, holding water against the tiles through the whole winter.

  • Water held against the tilesWet moss never dries out, so the tile surface is damp for months at a time.
  • Straight into the guttersEvery clump that breaks off ends up in the gutter run and blocks the flow.
  • Cleared, then treatedRemoved by hand or soft washed, then a biocide so it stays clear for years.

A Roof Clean That Still Looks Right In Five Years

Anyone can make a roof look better for a summer. The biocide treatment is what keeps it that way, and it is the part cheap quotes quietly leave out.

  • Moss cleared by hand or soft washed, never blasted
  • Gutters cleared of the debris afterwards, always
  • Full biocide treatment across the whole roof
  • Before and after photos on the day

Do It Before Winter

Moss Holds Water Against Your Tiles

Every wet spell, that moss is soaking and freezing against your roof and washing into your gutters. Sorting it early is always the cheaper option.

How A Roof Clean Runs

Six Stages, One Visit

Most domestic roofs are done in a day. Larger or badly affected roofs may run into a second.

1

Free inspection

We look at tile type, pitch, access and how established the growth is, then price it. Photos and a postcode are often enough to get you a figure.

2

Safe access set up

Ladders, roof ladders or pole systems depending on the property. Nothing goes on your roof that should not be there.

3

Moss removal

Cleared by hand or soft washed off, working in sections from the ridge down so nothing gets walked back into cleaned areas.

4

Gutters cleared

All the moss that has come off the roof gets taken out of the gutters and downpipes, then flushed through and checked for flow.

5

Biocide treatment

The full roof gets treated so regrowth is slowed right down. This is the part most cheap quotes leave out.

6

Clean down and photos

Drive, path and planting rinsed off, debris bagged and taken away, and you get the before and after photos.

Roof Cleaning Questions

Everything people ask before booking a roof clean.

Yes, and that is exactly why we do not use it. High pressure strips the protective surface off concrete tiles, can crack older or brittle tiles, and forces water up under the laps into the roof space.

If a quote you have had mentions jet washing or power washing the roof itself, ask them what pressure they are using and what they are doing about the tile surface afterwards.

With the biocide treatment applied, most roofs stay looking good for several years rather than a single season. Heavily shaded roofs, or ones under trees, grow back faster and may want a top up treatment sooner. You will be told honestly which category yours falls into.

Always, as part of the job. There is no point clearing a roof and leaving all the moss sitting in the gutters. They get cleared, flushed and checked for flow before we leave.

Yes, and it is the most common way to book it. The access is already set up, so doing the conservatory roof alongside the main roof costs less than booking it as a separate visit. Glass and polycarbonate are both fine.

You get told and shown a photo. Minor replacements can often be dealt with there and then, and one of our reviewers had eleven tiles replaced after a previous company left them in a poor state. Anything structural and we will tell you to get a roofer, rather than pretend otherwise.

Yes. The treatments are biodegradable and applied in a controlled way, with surrounding planting wetted before and rinsed after. Pets just need to be indoors while we are working.

Both. Access is assessed as part of the quote, and taller properties are usually done with pole systems rather than working at height unnecessarily.
